These are some of the most common slip and fall accidents and injuries in New York.
Slip and fall accidents are one of the most common personal injuries in the U.S. While Mother Nature is very often to blame for some accidents, not all are due to weather. There are a great number of slip and fall accidents that are due to negligence and premises liability.
These accidents can cause serious harm and lead to head, neck, and spine injuries.
The most common accidents include:
Slippery floors:
People can encounter slippery floors in a variety of places including convenience stores, grocery stores, fast food and restaurants, airports and more. Any place with soda fountains that could spill or floors that constantly need mopping are potential places for accidents. The correct protocol when a spill or slippery floor occurs is to provide a warning sign indicated a hazard and then to clean it in a timely manner. If neither of these things occur then a person who suffered a fall and an injury may have a strong case.
Icy sidewalks:
In the winter in New York the sidewalks may freeze over with ice. When that happens buildings and business owners have the responsibility to remove the icy hazards from the fronts of their property. Not doing so in a timely manner can lead to people slipping, falling, and suffering traumatic injuries of the head, neck, and spine.
Public Transportation:
Slip and falls are common on the MTA. The trains jolt around without warning and people have fallen in the sometimes dimly lit train cars and have risked getting trampled. They could also fall down slippery staircases, or trip over uneven sidewalks. Parties injured on the public transportation could sue the MTA.
Poor lighting or no hand rails:
Landlords have a responsibility to provide their tenants with a safe living environment. Not providing adequate lighting in the hallways, not fixing ripped carpet or uneven floors, not securing necessary handrails can all cause tenants or guests to trip and fall and injure themselves on the landlord’s property. Tenants could suffer a concussion, break a bone, or even damage their spine. In those cases the landlord may be sued.
